The Temporary Wallpaper That Transformed My Rental Apartment
The rules and restrictions that come with living in a rental can make your space feel more like a holding pattern than a home. We just want—and deserve—the apartment of our Pinterest dreams, right? The good news is, regardless of the obstacles, it’s entirely possible to upgrade your space even if you don’t own it. I’m certain of this because I turned my grim two-bedroom rental into a pink bachelorette pad.
The original wall colors were not ideal, and the living room windows —though large— weren’t centered and made the room feel smaller. I knew creating a space that felt like my own would require a big undertaking, but I was determined. For reference, here’s what I was working with:
Not ideal, right? Don’t worry, a very dramatic transformation is coming. With help from Decorist interior designer Jessica McCarthy, who taught me in my House Beautiful days that there’s nothing an accent wall can’t fix, I decided to try adhesive wallpaper. We picked this gorgeous pink floral design from Etsy shop (seriously!), Muse Wall Studio, and it changed everything.
Essentially a giant sticker, the temporary wallpaper stuck right on and instantly changed the room. While this is totally something you can DIY, I was intimidated by the 12-foot ceilings and matching the pattern, so I found a Task Rabbit who helped with it (and it was entirely worth the $175 it cost).
I am obsessed with how it came and will tell anyone who will listen that if you have a rental you plan on living in for at least two years, you need temporary wallpaper.
